An elegant, large, reclaimed cast iron fire surround likely to date to the Edwardian period. The surround is of a large size, ideal for a living or dining room. The surround has an interesting period design with circular panels on the crossbar with flowers inside them and interesting leaf designs on each end of the cross bar. The cast iron has been blacked and polished and has a good finish. The fire surround has a fixing lug on each side, under the mantel, for fixing the surround to the wall.
The fire surround is in good antique condition with some signs of age and some damage as expected of reclaimed items. The fire surround has suffered a knock, just below the mantel, and some damage can be seen (see picture 5 for details). The left hand foot had some damage and a metal plate, sprayed black, has been attached to cover the gap left by the broken iron. There is an indentation as the metal plate has been attached to the inside of the foot. We could add some filler to minimise the appearance of the repair but we could not guarantee the filler would survive transportation and it may be best for you to apply filler when the surround is in-situ. Please contact us if you would like further information about this. The iron has some knocks, casting marks and pitting. The back of the surround has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is of an impressive size and could be paired with a wood burner or a fire basket. The fire surround is a fine example of period design and it would make a fantastic statement piece for a home.
