An outstanding example of the Victorian cast iron "Peace & Plenty" fire surround attributed to the Coalbrookdale foundry, Shropshire. The reclaimed surrounds stunning design has representations of the Greek goddesses of Peace, holding a dove and olive branches, and Plenty holding a jug and a cornucopia overflowing with fruit and flowers. The figures are in classical dress and stand on columns with swag detailing and fluting that runs down the legs. The centre of the crossbar has an ornate corbel with fluted detailing. There is a decorative border under the mantel. The back of the fire surround has the name of the design and the registered design number RD40136, dating it to 1885. The iron has been spray lacquered and has a slightly silvery finish with some maroon showing through in places where there is slight surface rust. The lacquered finish allows you to paint the surround, should you wish to have it in a paler colour or we can black and polish the surround for an extra charge, if required. Please contact us for details and a quote.

The surround is extremely heavy and very well cast. The surround is bolted together and comes in four parts, for easier transportation. The fire surround is in very good antique condition with some small signs of age and a small repair. The right hand fixing lug was broken and a professional repair has been carried out with a metal plate put in and hard set professional filler applied, coloured to match, to strengthen the area broken and a new metal fixing lug has been added to allow the fire to be fixed to the wall. The fire surround has some casting marks and pitting. There is a small knock to one of the mantels front corners. The back has surface rust, as expected. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is of a very large size and it is a rare and wonderful example of Victorian craftsmanship and it would make a truly stunning feature for a home.
