A rare reclaimed antique tambour fronted copywriters desk. The desk is of a fantastic quality and we believe it dates to C.1910 and is possibly American. The desk / cabinet appears to have been used in an advertising agency as a copywriters desk and has space for 280 pencils and many drawers for type setting, letter sets and images. The desk has many interesting features such as as a hidden compartment behind the pencil storage and doors that have wonderful hinges that allow the doors to act as a gate or to be folded right back against the desk. The top of the desk has a tambour / rolltop that works well and has a key to lock it into the top of the cupboard doors. The key is present and the lock is interesting with a small spike on each side that comes out when the lock is engaged. The small drawers are finely made of oak or beech and have dovetail joints and the desk is made using walnut veneer over pine. The desk has been fitted with pine shelves that can be seen when the cupboard doors are opened, providing great storage. Please note: The desk cannot be sat at when the doors are shut but you could have them open and sit at the desk with a high stool or adjustable industrial work stool as the desk top is much higher than a standard desk (please see last picture where we have placed a stool in front of the desk for illustrative purposes). The desk could make for an ideal standing desk or as a cabinet or fantastic decorative feature.
The desk is in very good reclaimed condition with some signs of age and the desk has had some quality repairs carried out. The small pull handle is missing on the bottom drawer inside the desk. The bottom edge of the tambour front has had a repair. The desk top has had a patch repair. There are some holes, stains and ink marks on the desk top. There are some small holes left by now dead woodworm. The wood has some knocks and light damage in places. One side has a small hole, perhaps cut to fit a cable. Please see pictures for condition details. The desk is a fascinating and rare item with great character and it would make a truly wonderful statement piece for a home or business.
