A fantastic, highly decorative, original Georgian cast iron hob grate fire insert. The hob grate has fantastic period detailing. The fire has beautiful decorative features, with large wheat sheaves or leaves that top decorative columns. The cross bar has horizontal column style detailing. The fire opening is arched and the fire retains its original front bars with acanthus leaf and shell design finial at the base. The fire has the traditional warming plates on either side of the grill and there is reeded detailing on the inner legs and within the fire opening on the side and back plates. The iron has been blacked and polished. The hob grate is of an ideal size for a living or dining room or could be used for decorative purposes in a bedroom. The fire is in solid antique condition, with some signs of use, wear and slight damage, as expected. The fire brick has a crack down the middle but it is stable. There are some casting marks and scratches to the front face of the hob grate. The back has surface rust. The top plate is a replacement and does leave some gaps at the sides. The smoke flap is not currently attached and the original wire is missing. The smoke flap can be glued to the fire by purchaser if it is to be used for decorative purposes. If the fire is to be used we can wire up the smoke flap so it can open and shut. Please let us know if you would like the smoke flap wired upon purchase. One of the thin securing brace plates at the back of the fire has been replaced. There is a small gap between the left leg and the inner side plate within the fire opening. The burning grill will need securing by purchaser. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire has a fantastic appearance and would make a wonderful statement within a period home. The hob grate is a fine antique fire and the lovely design and its good size makes it a very desirable item.
