A reclaimed antique cast iron bedroom hob grate with arch. The hob grate is likely to date to the late Georgian or early Victorian era and has a fantastic period design. The hob grate has a large arch with a shell design surrounded by acanthus leaves and flowers. There is a thin decorative border around the arch. The hob grate has the traditional warming plates on either side and the original shaped front bars are present. There are decorative designs on each side of the grill area, under the warming plates and there is a triangle with sun rays above the fire brick. The iron has been blacked and polished and has a good finish.
The hob grate is in good solid condition with some signs of wear commensurate with age. The iron has some casting marks and pitting. The fire brick has some signs of wear and some cracking and bulging. There are small gaps on each side of the warming plates where the moulded edgings do not quite reach the main body of the hob grate. There is a thin gap on the right hand side of the grill (when looking at the hob grate) where it meets the fire cheeks. The tabs at the back of the fire that keep the top plate in place are worn or have been snapped and although they do help keep the top plate in place it will slip more easily now when the fire is moved and care will be needed when putting the top plate in place to ensure it stays (see last picture). There are some small scuffs and very small patches of surface rust and the back has surface rust, as expected. Please see pictures for condition details. The hob grate is a very nice example of period design and it would make a fantastic addition to a fireplace.
