A very pretty reclaimed, early Victorian, cast iron hob grate fire insert. The hob grate has a very pretty period design with acanthus leaves and scrolls around the inner arch. There is a decorative motif within the fire opening, above the grill. The hob grate has the traditional warming plates and the hob grate retains the original curved front bars with an ornate finial below the bottom bar. There are decorative designs on each side of the grill area, under the warming plates. The iron has been blacked and polished and it has a good finish. The hob grate has a registered design kite mark, dating it to 20th April but the year is slightly unclear and it could be either 1846 or 1856. The last picture shows the hob grate paired with a Victorian pine fire surround for illustrative purposes. The hob grate is in solid condition with some signs of wear commensurate with age and some repaired damage. The iron has some casting marks and pitting. One of the feet at the back of the hob grate has had a repair with a metal strengthening bar and screws fitted to it. The foot is now stable. The back of the hob grate has had strengthening bars and screws attached to the top plate and back as there have been some breaks. The strengthening bars will not be seen when the hob grate is fitted into a fire cavity. The left hand side of the hob grate (when looking at the fire) has a crack and it has had some repairs. The right hand side of the hob grate has a slight gap where the fire cheeks meet the front of the hob grate. There is a surface crack or casting line at the back within the fire opening. The back of the surround has surface rust, as expected. Please see pictures for condition details. The hob grate is a very nice example of early Victorian design and it is a very elegant item that would add great period character to a fireplace.
