A rare Colebrookdale Festoon cast iron fire surround designed by British sculptor Alfred George Stevens (1817-1875), a leading figure in Classical and Renaissance Revival. The fire, dating to 1875, has a truly stunning Classical Revival design with detailing in light relief. The fire's design was inspired by Stevens' work in Rome and Florence in the 1830's. The fire features a central figure, in Classical style, and the crossbar and legs are heavily decorated with birds and ribbons. There are similar fire surrounds designed by Alfred George Stevens in the Victoria and Albert and Tate museums. The Colebrookdale museum also houses an example of the Festoon fire surround.

The fire surround originally had a copper finish but this example had been painted at a later date. The fire has now been stripped to reveal an attractive greyish metal colour. There are some small areas where the original copper finish has been retained and purchaser could perhaps have a copper finish re-applied if desired. The fire surround has sustained some damage, had a replacement mantel and has been repaired to a high standard and therefore the fire is priced accordingly, as undamaged copper coloured examples have been sold for approximately £7000. The crossbar had a large break from top to bottom and a further break. There has been a break to the tops of both legs. All breaks have been welded and the fire is in a stable and solid condition but there are some small chips to the edge of the crossbar and the weld can be seen in places. The mantel has been replaced and has a differing design to the original. There is some residue paint left from stripping. Please see pictures for condition details.

The Festoon fire is a wonderful, elegant, example of Classical Revival design and is large and imposing. The Festoon has a fantastic history and this is a rare opportunity to purchase such a special design classic of the Victorian era.
