FS0279 A LARGE RECLAIMED VICTORIAN PAINTED CAST IRON FIRE SURROUND

A large, elegant, reclaimed painted cast iron fire surround dating to the Victorian period. The surround has a very attractive appearance with swags and bows along the crossbar and urns on either side of the swags, in the Adam style, popular during that era. The legs have flowers and bows and there is a pretty border under the mantel. There is a decorative border around the fire opening. There is a fixing lug on either side of the fire, under the mantel and there is a tab at the base of each foot. The fire surround has a kite dating mark at the back, dating the fire to 26th November 1881.

The cast iron has been painted white but there is chipping, staining and flaking to the paint and areas where paint is missing. We can refinish the fire surround at an extra cost. The options are as follows:

1) Shot blast to bare metal and then spray it matt black with a heat resistant paint or prime the surround in a white primer - £200 extra. 

2) Shot blast to bare metal and then spray black with heat resistant pain and then apply black polish and polish the surround to achieve a higher shine finish - £240 extra.

The surround is in good reclaimed condition with some signs of use and age, as expected. The paint has knocks, stains and chipping and the side edges of the legs and front of the feet are missing paint. The mantel has flaking and scratches to the paint and the paint is missing along the back edge. There are some knocks and chips to the iron. The back of the fire surround has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is of a good size and could be paired with a wood burner or a fire basket. The fire surround would make a wonderful period addition to a fireplace and is a fine example of Victorian design.
