Code: FS0307
Dimensions:
An elegant, large, reclaimed cast iron fire surround likely to date to the Edwardian period. The surround is of a large size, ideal for a living or dining room. The surround has an interesting period design with circular panels on the crossbar with flowers inside them and interesting leaf designs on each end of the cross bar. The cast iron has been blacked and polished and has a good finish. The fire surround has a fixing lug on each side, under the mantel, for fixing the surround to the wall.
The fire surround is in good antique condition with some signs of age and some damage as expected of reclaimed items. The fire surround has suffered a knock, just below the mantel, and some damage can be seen (see picture 5 for details). The left hand foot (when looking at the surround) had some damage and a metal plate has been attached to cover and strengthen where the damage was, at the back of the foot and filler has been added to the front of the foot. The filler is only very slightly noticeable when looking at the foot and there is a very small dip to the base edge of the foot (see pictures 12 and 13 for details). The other foot has a very small chip out of the base edge. The iron has some knocks, casting marks and pitting and there is a larger casting mark on the right hand side of the crossbar (when looking at the surround) that bulges slightly. The back of the surround has surface rust. The mantel screws are not totally flush with the mantel. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is of an impressive size and could be paired with a wood burner or a fire basket. The fire surround is a fine example of period design and it would make a fantastic statement piece for a home.
