A very elegant, reclaimed, Neo-Georgian fire surround likely to date to the early 20th Century. The body of the surround is cast iron but the original cast iron mantel was damaged and has been replaced with a high quality oak mantel, sprayed black. The fire surround has a very pretty appearance, emulating the popular designs of the Georgian period, with a female classical style cameo, in relief, in the centre of the crossbar with swags, bows and medallions on either side. There is a decorative repeating border along the base of the crossbar and another around the fire opening. There is a fixing lug on each side, under the mantel, for attaching the surround to the wall and a tab at the base of each foot for sinking into the hearth. The iron has been blacked and polished and it has a good finish. The back of the surround has a registered design dating number, RD483976 dating it to 1906. The fire surround is of a good size and is ideal for pairing with a fire basket or surrounding a wood burner.
The surround is in good antique condition with some signs of use and age, as expected. The cast iron has some casting marks and pitting. The mantel has some small knocks and wood knots. The back of the surround has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround has a very elegant and pretty design and it would make the ideal period statement piece for a home.
