Dimensions:
A fine quality, elegant, reclaimed Art Nouveau painted cast iron fire surround. The surround has a pretty design with tulips and scrolls along the crossbar, in the typical Art Nouveau style. There are raised mouldings along the crossbar and down the legs. The mantel has a moulded edge. The fire surround has a fixing lug on each side, under the mantel, for fixings for attaching the surround to the wall. The back of the surround has a registered design number, RD394280, dating the surround to 1902. The fire surround has been painted white but there are chips and losses to the paint and some staining and you may wish to strip and re-paint the surround to suit. We can have the surround shot blasted and then blacked and polished for a more traditional finish, if preferred, for an extra cost of £150. Please let us know at time of purchase if you would like this service.
The fire surround is in solid antique condition with some signs of use and age, as expected. The original paint has some stains, chipping, flaking and losses, especially to the edges of the legs. Some surface rust is visible. There are some cracks to the paint around the mantel screws. The inner edges are unpainted. There are some small knocks to the iron. The back of the surround has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is of a good compact size and could be paired with a wood burner or a fire basket. The surround is a lovely example of Art Nouveau design and it would make a fantastic period feature for a home.
