A very nice quality, original, reclaimed cast iron fire surround dating to the mid Victorian period. The surround has a handsome and classic appearance with diamond detailing on the crossbar and legs and the diamonds in the centre of the crossbar and on the legs are flanked by shaped panels. The bottom edge of the feet have simple moulded detailing. The iron has been blacked and polished and has a nice finish. The back of the surround has a registered design number RD99543, dating it to 1888. The fire surround doesn't have fixing lugs but has metal loops at the back that were designed for fitting into the wall and securing with ties. We can add 2 metal fixing tabs for fixings, one on each side under the mantel, for an extra £25. Please let us know if you would like the tabs adding at time of purchase.
The fire surround is in good antique condition with some signs of wear commensurate with its considerable age. There are some casting marks, pitting and some knocks to the iron. One leg has visible lines or cracks that are also seen on the back face but the leg does not appear to have had repairs and is strong and stable so it could be a casting mark rather than damage. The mantel top has a small hole made in it and has some smaller holes or pitting. The back has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The surround has a very nice classic and elegant period design and it could be used to surround a fireplace or perhaps a wood burner. The fire surround is a fantastic find and it would make a handsome period feature for a home.
