A stunning ornate, reclaimed, cast iron fire surround. The surround is likely to date to the late Victorian period C.1890-1900 and is of a large size. The surround has an intricate design with a central "eye" on the crossbar, surrounded by medallions, acanthus leaves and horns of plenty holding fruit and the side edges of the crossbar are shaped. There are bluebells running down the top of the legs and fluting at the bottom of the legs. The designs are surrounded by raised mouldings. There are flowers and light reeding above the mouldings, below the mantel, and decorative repeating borders. The mantel front and side edges have decorative detailing. The iron has been blacked and polished and has a good finish. The fire surround has a lug on each side, under the mantel, for fixings to attach the surround to the wall. There is a small tab at the base of each foot, designed for sinking into the hearth. New screws have been added to secure the mantel and there are two screws, under the mantel, that can be seen when looking under the mantel from the front of the surround (see pictures 8 & 9).
The fire surround is a reclaimed antique and has some signs of age and wear, as expected. The iron has some casting marks and pitting and there are some small scuffs. One of the side edges of one leg has a very small knick out of it. There is a small filled hole on the top of the mantel on one corner. The back of the surround has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround has a fantastic ornate appearance and is an ideal period feature item for a home.
