PLEASE NOTE: We have another fire surround of the same design and size (very minor differences in measurements) for sale, please see our item reference FS0424 for details, should you wish to purchase more than one. The last picture for this item show both of the surrounds together for your information. We are selling the fire surrounds SEPERATELY and are £1950 each.
A very fine quality, elegant, reclaimed Victorian cast iron fire surround. The "Elgar" surround has a very ornate design, with Adam style urns, medallions, swags and bows along the crossbar, above fluted detailing and square recessed panels with decorative designs within them. The sides of the crossbar have panels with attractive leaves and circular designs below them. The legs have ionic column detail and there are panels with bows and flowers. The top of the feet each have a delicate ribbon detail in a cross. The iron has been blacked and polished and has a nice finish. The surround has a registered design number, RD10000, dating it to 1888. The fire surround has a fixing lug on each side, under the mantel, for fixings to attach the surround to the wall. The bottom of each foot has a small tab that is designed to be sunk into the hearth.
The surround is in good antique condition with some signs of age and wear, as expected. There are slight gaps between where the section with circular designs meets with the ionic columns at the top of the legs but the fire is stable and sturdy (see picture 16). The iron has some casting marks and pitting. The mantel has had some filler applied to no longer needed screw holes. The back has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is of an impressive size and could be paired with a wood burner or a fire basket. The surround is a stunning example of Victorian design and its ornate and elegant appearance would make a fantastic feature for a fireplace.
