A very handsome reclaimed Gothic fire surround, likely to date to C.1890s. The surround has a striking appearance and is of a traditional Gothic design with quatrefoils and panel detailing along the crossbar and down the legs with arched detail. The outer edges of the surround have elegant columns that stand proud from the legs. The top corner quatrefoils each have a hole that does not have a fixing screw in it and we believe this have been for large wall fixing screws. The fire surround comes apart (see last picture) and will be like this for collection. The iron has been blacked and polished and has a good finish.
The fire surround is in good solid condition with some signs of age and wear, as expected. The cast iron has some casting marks and pitting. There is some pitting along the mantel front and side edges. The fire surround has some line casting marks around the corner quatrefoils. The left hand leg column (when looking at the surround) does not sit totally flush with the leg and is very slightly loose and there is a slight gap visible on the inner edge but it is stable (see picture 14). The back of the fire surround has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The surround has a stunning Gothic look and it could be used to surround a range, fireplace or perhaps a wood burner. The surround is a fantastic period find and it would make a wonderful feature in a home.
