A pair of unusual and attractive tile panels for a fireplace made by Sherwin & Cotton of Staffordshire (1877-1911). The tiles are mustard and dark orange in colour and depict beautiful designs with ladies carrying water jugs. The tiles are likely to date to approximately 1900. The detailing is of a very fine quality. The central panels are surrounded by rectangular border tiles of varying sizes and there are flower designs to the top and bottom. The tiles are designed to frame a fire on either side, being set in to the wall, and are thick and very heavy. The tiles have the makers mark, "Sherwins patent lock back" plaque at the top of each item. The tiles are in useable condition and have no major damage, however there are some signs of use and wear due to age. The tile glaze has some crazing and cracking. There is residue cement and smoke marks from use. One panel has a border tile missing on the bottom left hand side. There are some chips, knocks, stains and slight damage. One panel has a large chip and there are smaller chips to the panels (please see pictures for details). The tiles are of a fantastic quality and design and are from a renound tile maker. The tiles would add fantastic character to a hearth or could be used for decorative purposes elsewhere in the home.
