A very beautiful hand carved pine and gesso fire surround of a particularly fine quality. The large Victorian surround dates to C.1880 and has delicate detailing and handsome columns. The fire surround is stripped to bare wood and has a lovely colour, although it could perhaps be painted by purchaser if desired. The large columns on either side of the fire are hand carved, with ionic style tops, and stand in front of the surround sides. The fire is intricately designed with delicate gesso embellishment. The mantel edge and opening border has egg and dart detailing and the cross bar has classical Adam style urns and acanthus leaves. The item is ideal for a larger reception room. The surround is in very good antique condition with some aesthetic signs of age. The sides of the fire have some slight damage, with some cracks and gouges, please see pictures for details. Some of the gesso has cracks, knocks and there is some breakage to the egg and dart design under the mantel. The mantel has some slight surface cracks and knocks but the fire is in good, solid condition. The fire has an outstanding appearance, making it ideal for use as the main feature in a room. The fire is a rare and very desirable item.
