FC0128 AN ORIGINAL VICTORIAN CAST IRON FIRE INSERT AND PINE SURROUND

SOLD

Code: FC0128

Dimensions:

W: 81cm (31.9")H: 93cm (36.6")

A very pretty reclaimed, Mid-Victorian era, cast iron bedroom fire insert paired with its original Victorian pine surround. The fire has a very pretty design with decorative detailing around the arched fire opening. On each side of the fire opening is a decorative, removeable, trivet. The trivets can be swivelled to directly above the fire or outside of the fire opening and were traditionally used to warm cups. Please note the left hand trivet is a wooden replacement that has been made to copy the original design. The wooden trivet CANNOT be used with a fire and would need to be removed beforehand. The fire has retained its original, curved, front bars and the top flap. The back of the fire has a registered design number. The first number is hard to read but the RD number is probably either 53398 or 63398. Either number would date the fire to 1886. The pine surround has a classic and simple appearance with carved mouldings and a waxed or stained wood finish. The cast iron insert is in original untouched condition with a black paint finish. We can shot blast and re-polish the fire for an extra charge of £100. Please contact us for further information or to let us know you require this service. The fire is in good condition but does have some signs of age and some repaired damage, as expected of antique items. The cast iron paint coating has some small losses, tarnish and scratches. The grill has had some breaks that have been repaired and repairs can be seen. One trivet is a wooden replacement. The arm for holding the top flap open appears to have been put on the wrong way (please see pictures) and therefore if it is used to keep the flap open then the flap has to be put on the upside down. The fire may be best suited for decorative use and the arm removed. Please contact us if you wish to use the fire and require advice. The top flap has a repaired crack. The back leg is slightly loose. The back has surface rust. The pine surround has some colour variation and some small knocks and chips. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire is a charming example of Victorian design and would be a lovely addition to a period home.
