FS0209 VERY LARGE EARLY VICTORIAN PAINTED CAST IRON FIRE SURROUND

SOLD

Code: FS0209

Dimensions:

W: 155.2cm (61.1")H: 124cm (48.8")

A very large and elegant, reclaimed, early Victorian painted cast iron fire surround. The surround has a very attractive appearance and its impressive size makes it a very desirable item. The fire surround is nicely cast with a swag and medallion design with rope border along the cross bar and flowers at the top of the legs. The feet have large flowers in vases at the base of the legs, above the feet. The fire surround has been painted white but there are some chips to the paint and purchaser could have the surround stripped and re-finished to suit. The back of the surround has a kite dating mark and although it is now hard to read we can date the fire surround to pre 1883 when a new dating system was introduced. Please note the fire surround has a rebate to accommodate a fire insert or stone fire slips or it may be possible to fill the gap. Please contact us if you wish to discuss this, depending on how you wish to use the surround. We have taken a picture (last photo) of a straight edge against the leg to show the rebate. There are fixing lugs on either side of the crossbar and tabs at the base of the feet. The surround is in good reclaimed condition with some small signs of age and wear. There are small knocks to the iron. The back has surface rust as expected. One of the leg screws is currently loose. Please see pictures for condition details. The surround is a very fine example of early Victorian design and craftsmanship and it would make a stunning period addition to a home.
