FC0152 RECLAIMED ORNATE MID VICTORIAN CAST IRON COMBINATION FIRE

Dimensions:

An ornate, reclaimed, Mid-Victorian cast iron combination fire. The fire has a wonderful design with an unusual "pie crust" mantel edge. There is a decorative repeating fan style border under the mantel and a further rope border and  S shaped design below this. The legs have intricate detailing, typical of the era, and there are two borders around the arched fire opening. The fire retains its original curved front bars and concrete fire back. There are fixing lugs on either side, under the mantel, two lugs at the back of the mantel designed to sink in to the wall and two tabs at the feet for setting into the hearth. Please note we can cut the tabs on the base of the feet if required, please contact us for details. The top plate has a kite dating mark. The mark is difficult to read but after researching the numbers and letters on the kite we believe it to date to 9th March 1878. The back has AS SHAM cast into it, perhaps referring to the maker or the model name. The iron has been blacked and polished and has a very nice finish. The fire is in good condition with some signs of age and wear, as expected of reclaimed antiques. The fire has some small knocks and chips. The grill is a replacement and there is a gap between the grill and the front bars. The back has been bolted on recently so it is secure but the fire may be best suited for decorative use. The mantle screws do not sit totally flush with the mantel. The concrete fire back has some small knocks and chips. The back has surface rust. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire is of a good size, ideal for a reception room or larger bedroom and is a very nice example of Victorian design, ideal for adding character to a period home.
