A reclaimed, original, antique cast iron fire back. The fire back is a very fine example of an original fire back and depicts a female historical figure, perhaps Britannia or Bodecia, with a shield and in a victory pose and standing on an enemy body. The top has PAX (peace) cast in to it and the bottom of the fire back has the date 1627. We believe the fire back either dates to 1627 or is a very early Georgian piece as the back has a dented and raised surface, made by very early casting methods. The outside edges of the fire back have a fruit border and there is ornate detailing to the shaped top. The fire back is in very good condition for its considerable age with some charming and characterful signs of age, as expected. The fire back has some patches of surface rust. There are some scratches, casting marks and small dents left from casting. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire back is a very nice antique item and it is unusual to find such an old fire back in good condition. The fire back would add great character and period charm to a hearth.
